For alumnus Mike Chinn, the University of Virginia has shaped nearly every aspect of his life.
Growing up in Tappahannock, Virginia among a family of UVa sports fans, he followed in his brother’s footsteps to attend UVA. As a History and Economics major in the College of Arts & Sciences, he found particular joy in his coursework and developed the reading, writing, and critical thinking skills that became foundational to his career. He built lifelong friendships and benefited from the University's rich academic, social, and extracurricular experiences. Even his first job in Charlottesville came through UVA relationships, and he and wife Mary’s paths first crossed through University connections .
When it came time to make a philanthropic investment in the College, the new Career Design and Discovery Initiative felt especially meaningful. The effort aligns closely with a longstanding family commitment to helping students connect their interests and talents with fulfilling career paths. Mary spent much of her career, including a stint leading career services at the McIntire School, working with undergraduates and young professionals on career exploration and professional development, making the initiative a natural fit for their support.
He believes the College provides students with an exceptional liberal arts foundation, but that translating those skills into career opportunities can sometimes be challenging. Supporting the initiative is a way to help students bridge that gap, connecting academic experiences with career exploration, alumni mentorship, and experiential learning opportunities.
His hope is that this gift serves as a catalyst for the broader vision Dean Christa Acampora is advancing for Arts & Sciences students.
"We are very happy to play that catalyst role and help get moving something that's important to the dean and important to us," he said.
As his own son recently graduated from the College and began navigating his career journey, the initiative's mission feels especially timely and personal. Supporting Arts & Sciences students as they discover their futures is an investment in the next generation of Wahoos.
